Passengers at CentroCentro

From 13 February to 28 September, the CentroCentro cultural space is hosting an exhibition of work by photographer María Antonia García de la Vega: a collection of black and white portraits of women in the visual arts and other cultural fields, made over more than eight years.

María Antonia García de la Vega has been travelling for years, inviting different women from the world of culture to dream and accompany her on this never-ending journey. In her goal of tracing women within the fabric of culture, she has travelled from one to another seeking to immortalise them and turn them all into Passengers. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to reflect on the role of women in culture and grandly celebrate all her travelling companions.

Curated by Zara Fernández de Moya, this exhibition takes us on a tour of the artist’s careful study, her staging, lighting and the body language used in this evocative collection of black and white portraits.

With a degree in Geography and History (Anthropology) and a PhD in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid, María Antonia García de la Vega (Madrid, 1956) began her photographic career in 2003, completely self-taught and enhancing her training with courses and workshops in digital and analogue photography. She worked on a landscape trilogy called Memorandum Natura that led to the publication of her first book in 2015 dedicated to forests. Since 2016, she created a series of studio portraits, Uchronia, inspired by the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Since 2019, she has worked on this series of portraits of women from the world of culture that has seen the light in book format and is now an exhibition.
