Etched in the Gaze. Prints in the Collection of the Marqués de Cerralbo

From 16 October to 25 January 2026, the Cerralbo Museum presents an exhibition that explores one of the lesser-known facets of the aristocrat’s collecting practice, revealing his fascination with graphic art and European printmaking.

The exhibition brings together a selection of prints from the private collection of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, the 17th Marquis of Cerralbo (1845–1922), a key figure in Spanish collecting at the turn of the 20th century. Although his collection is mainly associated with decorative arts, painting and archaeology, the Marquis was also passionate about graphic art, gathering prints from the leading European studios.

Through this exhibition, the Cerralbo Museum invites you to discover the importance of printmaking as an artistic medium and a vehicle for knowledge, showcasing works by prominent artists from the Italian, Flemish and Spanish schools. The collection includes pieces by artists such as Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya and Piranesi, along with examples of anonymous masters who depicted religious, mythological and genre scenes.

The exhibition highlights the ability of printmaking to capture details and emotions, as well as its fundamental role in the dissemination of art before the advent of photography. Visitors will appreciate both the technical quality of the prints and the Marquis's refined taste for works on paper.

The exhibition also features documents, engraving tools and explanations of the techniques used, making the visit both educational and aesthetically enriching.
