As part of the city’s Easter celebrations, the Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Madrid will be performing in La Almudena Cathedral on 10 April, conducted by Jan Cober.
At this concert, the ensemble will be performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E-Flat Major, K. 297b, a stunning piece that stands out for its interaction between wind instruments. Composed in 1778, it is an example of the classic style, combining concerto and symphony forms. In this piece, Mozart highlights the characteristics of each instrument, creating a rich and varied texture.
In the second half of the recital, they will perform a selection of processional marches. The processional march is a musical genre designed to accompany Holy Week processions, characterised by a structure that includes a theme, development, trio and reprise, sometimes with an introduction and a coda. This type of music is very popular in Spain, forming part of the repertoire of marching bands.
La Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Madrid is a large music ensemble featuring wind instruments, strings, harp, and piano sections. It has a history dating back more than 100 years, initially formed by Ricardo Villa and José Garay. Both agreed on the band's unique line-up, which includes lower strings such as cello and double bass, in addition to the harp and complete families of instruments (woodwind, percussion…). Many great figures have been members of this ensemble, including Spanish composers, musicians and directors such as Ricardo Villa (founding director) and Pablo Sorozábal.
