The Spanish National Ballet will première a flamenco show based on the photographic vision of this art by Colombia's Ruvén Afanador from 10 to 20 July (Tuesday to Sunday) at Teatro de la Zarzuela.
Charity performance to support UNRWA - 9 July, 7.30pm
Charity gala to support the people of Gaza and UNRWA. In this charity evening, all proceeds will go to UNRWA’s humanitarian work, which continues to provide vital aid in extreme circumstances. If you are unable to attend, you can collaborate via row zero.
With music by Cristóbal Saavedra, this production by Marcos Morau—trained between Barcelona and New York, director of the La Veronal dance ensemble and recipient of the 2013 National Dance Prize—merges Afanador’s vision with the ambition of forging a new artistic universe. Morau seeks to transfigure one legacy into another and generate a common place where the voices of different art forms can collaborate and inspire others.
The work pivots around photographic series such as Mil Besos (2009) and Ángel Gitano (2014), in which Afanador incorporated the image of flamenco into contemporary visual language in a very personal way. These shots were taken in high-contrast black and white under the Andalusian sun to create striking plays on light and shadow.
Marcos Mora Ureña, better known as Marcos Morau, is a choreographer born in Onteniente (Valencia) in 1982. Also versed in photography and playwrighting, he studied at the Dance Conservatory in Valencia and the Movement Research in New York.
