Mafalda, the popular character created by Quino, now has her very own sculpture in Madrid, unveiled on 28 October 2024, outside Casa del Lector in Matadero Madrid. Created by the Argentine sculptor Pablo Irrgang, it is the 12th statue of Mafalda in the world and the 3rd in Spain (the others are in Oviedo and Barcelona).
Wearing her characteristic red dress, this statue of Mafalda sits on a public wooden bench. Made of pigmented epoxy resin, it measures around 80 cm and weighs 20 kilos. It was donated to Madrid City Council by the publishing house Lumen, which has been publishing the stories about this popular character since 1970.
The installation of this sculpture pays tribute to the most famous girl in Argentine comics, an icon of social criticism, feminism and justice since her creation in 1964.
The sculpture will remain in this location for a time and, later, it can be moved to other districts for specific events such as book fairs.
