Located in the Puente de Vallecas district alongside Fire Station Number 8, this museum is devoted to the activities of the municipal fire brigade since its origins. The history of Madrid is parallel to its history.
It was opened in 1982 to preserve and display machines and materials used throughout the history of the fire brigade. After remaining closed for a long period, the museum re-opened its doors following a full refurbishment and review of its collections.
Structured chronologically, the exhibition space immerses visitors in the different stages of the history of Madrid thanks to the information displayed in texts on the vertical panels, which include illustrations, graphs, explanatory maps and photos.
Throughout the tour, visitors will be able to find out how the City Council’s Fire Brigade has developed by looking at the vehicles and cabinets with different elements on display, and how the tools, equipment or action protocols when attending incidents have been perfected. They will also understand the importance of gymnastics for fire-fighters, with a space that recreates the training area at any fire station.
The Museum also incorporates interactive resources and virtual recreations focusing on the causes and consequences of fire, along with a major aspect, namely prevention.
There is also a space devoted to the memory of major incidents (fires, plane or railway crashes) that have occurred in our city in which fire-fighter involvement was key. Memory also includes a tribute to those professionals who have fallen whilst in active service.
The area devoted to the Fire-fighters Archive provides a small exhibition of valuable documents, ranging from the document setting up the Brigade to fire books or operator logs that detail the history of Madrid, written by fire-fighters (almost always in their own handwriting).
