Casa de Vacas, in the Retiro neighbourhood, is currently a cultural centre with exhibitions, theatre and concerts. It was constructed in 1874 as a cowshed and dairy, and is still known by that name.
At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a dance hall known as Pavillón, one of the mythical places of Madrid nightlife until it was transformed into the cultural centre it is today, after it was completely devoured by fire.
On the outdoor terrace, which has also been turned into an exhibition space, there are exhibitions of monumental sculptures that have been enthusiastically received by the public and by creators who were crying out for a space like this to exhibit their large-scale pieces, including artists such as Victor Ochoa, Manuel Pereda de Castro and Antonio Pérez de Castro.
It also has a theatre with seating capacity for 140 spectators, hosting cultural, educational and leisure performances, such as poetry recitals, conferences, films, debates, theatre for families, children and adults, classical music and rock concerts, zarzuela, opera, etc. It is also available for cultural activities to raise awareness and the participation of non-profit associations and entities that need spaces to showcase their work.
