It’s a common dilemma during the family holidays: mum and dad want to go sightseeing or visit a museum, but the little ones just want to play. In Madrid you can get both, making everyone happy.

There are lots of playgrounds and children’s corners in the city. On Fuencarral Street (between Quevedo and Bilbao) and in a variety of squares – Tirso de Molina, Santa Ana, Lavapiés, Dos de Mayo –, kids can burn off loads of energy. They’ll have sandboxes or other soft enclosures, so you won’t have to worry about your children falling over.

Next to the Royal Palace or along Paseo del Prado, there are strategically located playgrounds where you can take a break and make your children happy on your cultural tour of Madrid. Adults can take the opportunity to visit the Royal Collections Gallery. You can also visit the new Mirador de la Cornisa viewpoint at the Royal Palace, which offers stunning views of the Campo del Moro and Casa de Campo parks, where children can walk along the esplanade.

Parks

The top park for children in Madrid is Madrid Río Park, offering as many as 17 playgrounds or children’s areas and 65 different attractions. Imaginative entertainment for kids of different ages, in a sustainable natural environment: Slide Hill, Log Jungle, Super Tyrolean Traverse, Beach, Rope Trails… just what the little ones need.

The Retiro Park also has 11 children’s play areas. A meeting place and somewhere to go for a walk for many citizens, it is a must for an excursion with children due to the proximity of many places of interest, such as the Paseo del Arte, where three of Spain’s most important art galleries are located: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum. The area is also home to the Paseo del Prado and the Buen Retiro, Landscape of Arts and Sciences, also known as the Landscape of Light, declared UNESCO World Heritage. You can also roller skate, ride a bike, sunbathe, row a boat and watch concerts, juggler or magician performances. Inside El Retiro Park, it is possible to visit Montaña de los Gatos (Cat Mountain), one of the most iconic places in the park which has reopened after being closed for 20 years.

Casa de Campo Park is a must for any family trip to Madrid. This is where you will find the Madrid’s Zoo Aquarium, the Amusement Park and the remodeled Casa del Campo Lake with numerous restaurants. No kid will want to miss it! The park has a number of children’s playgrounds, like the castle with slides and footbridges to be found past the Puerta de Rodajos gate.

In addition to areas in the city centre, other districts like Usera have children’s play areas, such as the Barrio de Orcasitas Park, a unique park with elements for play, integration and accessibility, or the Jardín el Torero Park which has two sports courts and a children’s play area.

Carabanchel has a children’s play area at the Salvador Allende Park spanning a surface area of 540 mwhich is designed in a fun and attractive way for children of all ages and capabilities.

Moving away from the centre of Madrid, in Leganés, there is a new children’s park in Calle Osa Mayor, with more than 5,000 m2 and a 10-metre high Robinia castle, the largest in Europe.

As of 2025, the Villaverde district boasts a unique play area whose main attraction is the Engineering Tower, a large structure almost ten metres high made up of two linked towers, multiple platforms at different heights and various features, such as slides, rope climbing areas and a fireman's pole. It also has an inclusive merry-go-round and see-saws, sand boxes and diggers, ensuring an accessible and stimulating play experience for all children. It is a new space that encourages free and creative play, integrating elements adapted for children of all abilities.
